ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses Gross and Fine motor skills and their difficulties. Pupils with autism may have delayed development of their gross and fine motor skills, with difficulties that continue through their school life. The Gross motor skills encourage individual or small group activities to improve specific gross motor skills encourage a wide range of outdoor play at home and school to develop gross motor skills and support participation in physical education (PE), some aspects of which are more individual. The Fine motor skills give opportunities to develop pre-writing skills, support may be required in technology lessons where difficulties with fine motor skills may cause problems. Specialised equipment may be useful. The Gross motor skills difficulties includes poor skills in PE related to gross motor skills difficulty, and lack of understanding of the pupils own positioning in space. The Fine motor skills difficulties include poor letter formation, disliking the feel of paper under their hand.
