Pupils may have difficulty understanding and using: The initiation and maintenance of conversations, language content and structure, volume of speech, intonation and pitch, turn-taking in conversations, non-verbal communication: facial expression, body language, gesture, eye contact. Pupils may have poor social understanding and have difficulties with: Developing and maintaining relationships, understanding another persons feelings, working as part of a pair, using appropriate behaviour towards others, and understanding social rules. Pupils with autism may not have the same motivation as others, owing to difficulties with social understanding. Support them by: Including the reward in the visual timetable to reward a completed task, and rewarding frequently. Pupils with autism will have a variety of strengths, varying from person to person, which will help to access the curriculum, including: Ability to process visual information, and good use of Information and Communication Technology (ICT).
