Impairments of flexible thinking, coherence and executive function associated with autism mean that pupils with autism may display a number of characteristics such as they may have difficulty creating something entirely from their imagination, they may have difficulty understanding abstract concepts. Those things that can be seen or touched will be understood, but for concepts such as furniture or heavier, They may have difficulty making sense of everyday experiences, especially in understanding their social and cultural meaning, They may have difficulty remembering personal memories and events outside the context in which they occurred and making connections with existing knowledge. However, they often have an extensive memory for factual information learned by rote. The strategies that will support the pupil: Frameworks such as storyboards and cloze exercises to aid organisation and planning of independent writing, Visual cues such as pictures and diagrams to support learning.
