ABSTRACT
Classifying entities into categories is at the core of scientifi c practice, especially in the life sciences. In medicine, the discipline of classifying diseases is called nosology . In this chapter we will give an overview of the theoretical background and current approaches to the nosology of physical diseases, as well as the aims and contexts of disease classifi cations and their challenges.
