ABSTRACT

The validity of this proposition is seen clearly in an analysis of sex difference research. In both of the organizing principles used here, situation and personality interact. In the one instance, we find that situations may differ in the extent to which assertive and afflliative strategies are possible. In situations where only one or the other strategy is feasible, we may find men and women differing on a quantitative basis. In contrast, situations which provide both possible actions will show qualitative differences in behavior.
