ABSTRACT

Once the main microphones have been placed for an optimal overall balance of the orchestra in the room, the next step is optimizing the string sound and balancing the strings to the rest of the orchestra (winds, brass, percussion). The placement and adjustment of a widely spaced pair of microphones commonly referred to as “outriggers” will be discussed, and the best use of “spot” or support microphones for each string section will be addressed.
