ABSTRACT

There are many available resources for information on recording piano and many proposed techniques. Hundreds of recordings are available as references spanning the mainstream repertoire, but it is virtually impossible to find out how each recording was captured (number of microphones, microphone type, etc.). For the newcomer, this can be a frustrating and discouraging experience. This chapter provides a summary of the most common techniques for classical presentation of the instrument and some suggested starting points for evaluating piano sound over microphones.
