ABSTRACT

Introduction Although the majority of people under correctional supervision are men, the number of

women in prison and on community supervision is still substantial. Specifically, women

account for 25% of probationers, 11% of parolees, and nearly 7% of state and federal

prisoners (Carson & Sabol, 2012; Maruschak & Parks, 2012). Given that womenmake up a

relatively small proportion of offenders overall, many of the programs and services

provided to them were initially designed for men. This chapter reviews the gender-

specific literature as it relates to assessment and treatment, and it offers recommenda-

tions for providing services that are responsive to women while keeping the general

principles of effective intervention in mind.
