ABSTRACT

There is clearly a statistical relationship between drug use and violence. Drug users are generally more violent than nonusers, and violent individuals are generally heavier drugs users than nonviolent individuals. However, correlation does not equal causation. Below I briefly review the empirical evidence for the drugs-violence association and alternative theoretical models to explain the connection. All the relevant literature cannot be covered in this short chapter, so the reader is referred to several excellent reviews for greater detail.1
