Pretext Telephone Calls

A pretext telephone call is a covert investigative technique used to gather information

about a subject. In a pretext call, an investigator or someone representing the

investigator places a telephone call to the subject, or someone close to the subject,

in which the caller attempts to elicit information without telling the recipient that

the caller is associated with a law enforcement agency. The information sought can

be very specific, such as determining the subject’s whereabouts, or it can be quite

broad and include any question for which the investigator believes he can obtain an

answer.
