the major programmatic themes used by the police to influence the community has been crime prevention. Crime prevention programming has been used to positively change police-community relations and public attitudes toward the police, as well as to attempt to reduce the incidence of crime and victimization. The relative effectiveness of a variety of these programs is discussed. Finally, community policing is explored. This philosophy is at the forefront of the police response to community problems today. Basically, it represents an organizational arrangement that attempts to cause the police department to focus on community problems as opposed to focusing on symptoms of problems. Too often, the police only superficially address citizen problems, and community policing causes a more thorough and directed response to problems and issues.
