No single volume can provide a comprehensive coverage of the history of criminal justice in the Western world, but the chapters of this book provide suffi-
cient basis for drawing tentative conclusions concerning crime, modes of law
enforcement, and methods of punishment both in the United States and some of the countries whose governments most influenced the creation of the
American style of governing.
