ABSTRACT

In this chapter, we examine the impact of three specific types of entries (known, unknown, and hybrid) on both officer and suspect performance. Because the debate surrounding the entries is complex, we conducted a number of studies to address specific issues. Experiment 1 was focused on the impact of the entry types on the accuracy of participants playing the role of hostile criminal suspects. This experiment also assessed the speed at which both the suspects and officers fired, and whether or not the second officer was hit while passing behind the first in the unknown entries. Experiment 2 examined the accuracy of the first officer entering the room. Experiment 3 sought to replicate the data on first officer accuracy in Experiment 2 and examine how quickly the second officer was able to fire. Experiment 4 sought to replicate the results from Experiments 13 and also assess the amount of time it took the first officer to fire during the entry.
