ABSTRACT

A well-managed police department is easily distinguishable because of its positive leadership. It is the catalyst that proves to be synergistic in nature. It gets things done. It is innovative and maximizes efforts to provide the services needed to improve the quality of community life and fulfill the conditions of the police mission and vision. A marginal or inept organization can be transformed into a successful one through effective leadership. It gives life and reinforces an organization in its efforts to achieve agency goals and objectives. A truly effective supervisor provides officers with a clear sense of purpose that can be translated as the vision provides guidance to the future, the mission describes the intent of the organization, and goals provide a framework for achievement ( Gostick & Elton, 2009 ). It can be seen readily that good leadership, while an intangible quality, must be present if officers are to be galvanized into task accomplishment.
