ABSTRACT

Peacemaking criminology has the potential to be effective at many levels. We have already discussed how personal transformation and institutional change can be envisioned by peacemaking criminology. While each of these levels of change are important, there is another opportunity to implement peacemaking that is rapidly gaining momentum around the world as an effective and humane way to deal with offenders. Community justice is emerging as an alternative to the traditional criminal justice system. While there are many variations of the community justice theme, we will concentrate on a process termed restorative justice as a way to demonstrate how positive change can occur outside the criminal justice system.
