THE ROOTS OF AMERICAN PAROLE Parole from prison, like the prison itself, is primarily an American innovation. 1 It emerged from a philosophical revolution and a resulting tradition of penal reform established in the late eighteenth century in the newly formed United States. As with many other new ideas that emerged in early America, parole had its roots in the practices of English and European penal systems.
