ABSTRACT

The workload of police officers has been the focus of a number of studies during the past 30 years. I Using a variety of research methodologies, from examining calls to the police and dispatch records to observational studies, this research has focused on providing an understanding of the types of activities police officers perform on a daily basis (Cordner, 1978; Cumming, Cumming & Edell, 1965; Frank, Brandl & Watkins, 1997; Greene & Klockars, 1991; Kelling, Pate, Dieckman & Brown, 1974; O'Neill & Bloom, 1972; Reiss, 1971; Webster, 1970; Wilson, 1968; Parks, Mastrofski, DeJong & Gray, 1999). Unfortunately, most, if not all, of this research describes the work routines of officers employed by large police agencies.
