ABSTRACT
Picturebooks are a major art form in contemporary society, and many artists who would previously have exhibited their artwork in museums and galleries exhibit their art in the picturebook format. Picturebooks for adults represent a new literary trend that emerged in Scandinavia in the early 1990s. Picturebooks targeted at adults demonstrate that adults are interested in visual stories and stories in which the verbal and visual texts constitute a polyphonic play. Picturebooks for adults are artworks whose target group is adults only, and are often marked as such using labels and/or subheadings. Picturebooks for adults are art works whose target group is adults. They can be defined as a narrative text addressed to adults with at least one picture on each spread. Picturebooks for adults cross boundaries to other mediums and genres. The picturebook for adults separates itself from the mentioned definitions of crossover picturebooks.
