ABSTRACT

Bonobos are the closest relatives of chimpanzees and resemble them closely in physical features (Box 26.1). Though sometimes called pygmy chimpanzees, bonobos simply have a more slender build than other Pan species rather than being a miniature version. They overlap common chimpanzees in height and weight because of their long limbs and muscular thighs. Bonobos are scattered across the Democratic Republic of the Congo in various kinds of forest. Some exploit secondary forest and savanna in mosaic habitats. Despite resembling common chimpanzees in many features, bonobos display some drastic differences in behavior.
