ABSTRACT
The term human is ambiguous and laden with controversial connotations. We will limit it to the species Homo sapiens and refer to the clade that produced the human species by the zoological term hominins (Box 27.1). The term encompasses living humans and all fossil forms that are more closely related to us than to any of the apes.
