ABSTRACT

This chapter proposes the organizing perspective to present the transdisciplinary research model, using the Breast Cancer and Environment Research Center/Program (BCERC/P) as a primary exemplar. Integrating a team of researchers from multiple disciplines so they form a cohesive strategy to address a complex health problem such as breast cancer is an evolving process that merits considerable attention. It also explains the four flows of the learning organization such as the membership negotiation, self-structuring, activity coordination, institutional positioning to discuss relevant factors that helped constitute the BCERC/P. An examination and application of the these four flows to the BCERC/P transdisciplinary research model provides insight into how communication processes shaped the organizing of the BCERC/P into a transdisciplinary learning organization. It is essential that all stakeholders involved in the transdisciplinary research model embrace the full vision that all team members are necessary and valuable for bringing the goals of the project to fruition.
