ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book discusses the unique ideas of marriage and family therapy, the relational values, and the path to professional licensure. It offers tips and techniques for identifying the areas of specialization within the field that will fit best for you. The book looks at the increasingly inclusive and diverse community of marriage and family therapists. It also considers how marriage and family therapists get jobs, and in what practice areas, and give examples of successful marriage and family therapists in each type of setting. Finally, the book concludes with general recommendations for success in this field, gleaned from our own experiences and from those of our success examples. It examines job opportunities internationally for graduates from Commission on Accreditation in Marital and Family Therapy Education (COAMFTE) accredited master's programs.
