ABSTRACT

This chapter explores a series of interviews with successful graduates of accredited Marriage and Family Therapy (MFT) programs and covers a wide range of career options. Marriage and family therapy skills are applicable in a wide variety of settings, including corporate and organizational settings. The chapter seems to be useful to focus on one's skill set, rather than feel limited as to setting. Thinking systemically and relationally was mentioned by virtually all of our success examples as the most useful part of their family therapy training. Specific brief therapy skills, and an appreciation of diversity, were also often cited. So many shared how they often planned on one route for their professional career but found opportunities and passion in another direction. The chapter ends with a section for those professionals who wish to practice abroad. It is an indispensable guide for marriage and family therapists wishing to start their career, or change their area of practice.
