ABSTRACT

In this chapter, we introduce you to a particular academic genre: the research paper. We review the main parts of a research paper and raise awareness of some of the characteristics of these different parts. We can give you only limited advice on referencing and writing style but there are some good sources of advice that you can turn to, e.g. Anderson and Poole (2001) or Swales and Feak (2000, 2004). Frequently, departments have their own style sheets that they would like their students to use and you should follow those in the first instance.
