ABSTRACT

The growth of auto-based mobility across the globe should perhaps come as no surprise; after all, the car companies are the epitome of multinational enterprises with global reach. But the mass mobility by car that is desired and even planned for by the Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa (BRICS) and other developing countries confronts a reality that the more advanced nations have begun to recognise: namely, that auto-mobility is unsustainable from an economic and environmental point of view. The International Transport Forum (ITF) is an intergovernmental organisation. Its stated aims are to 'act as a strategic think tank with the objective of helping shape the transport policy agenda on a global level and ensuring that it contributes to economic growth, environmental protection, social inclusion and the preservation of human life and well-being'. Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT) produced a report in 2011 titled Vision 2035, which outlines the future for logistics and transport in the UK.
