ABSTRACT

Men are not the only grownups developing intimate relationships with dolls. The last two chapters about men and dolls naturally raise the question of how women fit into this picture, other than as models for the dolls.1 RealDolls boasts three male dolls  – Michael, Nick, and Nate – along with dozens of female dolls. The disproportion in products for men and women parallels perversion statistics (Stoller, 1975; Moore, 2010). Male dolls are purchased mostly by homosexual men seeking a male doll rather than by women who want a silicone companion. Aware of the gender bias, RealDoll even advertises its male dolls’ 7-inch oral capacity (RealDoll.com). Apparently, some lesbians buy sex dolls, though they often prefer the female models (AliExpress. com). Several women artists, like Stacy Leigh, Amber Hawk Swansen, and Laurie Simmons, have bought female sex dolls to use in their art.
