ABSTRACT

Sutton-Brown suggested that there is a dearth of information available within the literature regarding how to implement a photovoice study. A number of factors contribute to decisions made regarding who is in a position to lead and facilitate any given photovoice study. Many photovoice studies written about in the literature include a professional photographer as a member of the team. Supplies needed for photovoice projects vary. Throughout the duration of a photovoice project, funds will be necessary. The inertia for most research studies stems from personal experience. Because photovoice is a form of participatory action research, traditional, positivist, random sampling procedures are subverted. Participant attrition is very common, as was apparent in Baker and Wang's study. Obtaining informed consent and photography release is critical during the initial meeting. This chapter explicates the first five steps of the photovoice process: identification, invitation, education, documentation, and narration.
