ABSTRACT

This chapter outlines the pros, cons, and future of the photovoice methodology. The proliferation of photography technologies is changing the ways in which photovoice projects can be carried out. This remains an under-explored subject within the current literature. The advent of 360-degree photography technology, among other advances in this area, gives current and future photovoice researchers an increasingly broad palette of ways in which they can equip and encourage participants to take pictures. Harper observed that images in the twenty-first century are everywhere, they are extraordinarily impermanent, and their social impact cannot be anticipated. Photovoice has educative potential. While photovoice is predominantly a research methodology, scholars have explored its pedagogical applications. Whether we realize it or not, the actions and thought processes prompted by the photovoice process are such close matches to the ways in which life unfolds, for many, on a regular basis.
