ABSTRACT

In this final chapter the author discusses how some of the topics dealt with throughout the book, asking what one can get out of the study of language and how the study of language can help once personal development. Language is one of the ways in which speakers present themselves, similar to looks, and displays of power. Common attitude that is the subject of endless blog posts, newspaper columns and discussions is 'the decline of the English language'. In a job application, however, it is a good idea to use a formal style, adhering to the prescriptive rules of spelling and grammar in the language. Thus, using a very informal type of language in a formal situation attract negative attitudes. Being trained in linguistics, one can devise discourse strategies and adjust once language to the situation, evaluating once intonation, use of vocabulary, grammatical constructions, cohesion and coherence in the text.
