ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the differing models and problems associated with efforts by schools to educate for equality of opportunity. In the 1830s, Horace Mann declared schools the great balance wheel of society by providing graduates with equality of opportunity to pursue wealth. In this context, equality of opportunity means that all members of a society are given equal chances to pursue wealth and enter any occupation or social class. Sometimes people think equality of opportunity means equal incomes and status. Therefore, it is important to emphasize what it is not: Equality does not mean that everyone will have equal incomes and equal status.
