ABSTRACT

Ethernet is a networking standard that allows different types of devices to communicate on the same network. There are several versions of Ethernet that operate at different rates of transmission, all of which are much faster than the baud rate of DMX, which is why Ethernet can be used to send multiple universes of DMX. When end-users demanded more specialized control for larger, more complicated systems, independent console manufacturers sprang up to meet the need, and the idea of using DMX512 for automated lighting control made sense. There are different categories of cable that can be used with Ethernet networks based on the specifications and capabilities of the cable. A network switch is a specialized piece of hardware that has several Ethernet ports and its job is to forward incoming data to its intended recipient. The size of the network portion and the host portion of an internet protocol address are determined by the subnet mask.
