ABSTRACT

As soon as the Cambridge University estate began to be managed in a coherent way, there was 'thought for the morrow'. The reports by professors Swinnerton-Dyer and Mott shows that the university, particularly the science/technology departments, should look to the west for future expansion; thereafter, steps are taken to consolidate and then develop the West Cambridge site. This chapter provides a description of the actions taken to support those processes so as to get to a position whereby the North West site could be developed in the way that the University wanted. The 'Cambridgeshire Plan' set out policies which were entirely satisfactory for the University. In particular, there was an acceptance that the University should be allowed to develop the land at North West Cambridge and that there should be a release from the green belt to allow for that.
