ABSTRACT

Rudolf von Laban was born in Bratislava and studied architecture before his interest in the mechanics of physical and mental effort led him to travel in order to study the movement patterns of the peoples of the Near East and the Chinese. The six workshops aim to provide the building blocks of Laban's vocabulary of action; as each of the four elements of flow, space, time and force are explored and understood they can be absorbed gradually, empowering the actor with the techniques of rhythmic and specific expressive action. The Laban analysis of action, which is practical and immediately applicable to an actor's work on character and the rhythms of text as well as to the entire rehearsal and creative process, enables the actor to develop and refine his understanding of the body, voice and mind in action. Movement for actors means the action of voice, thought, psychology and emotion, the score of a text, as well as physical action.
