ABSTRACT

Rudolf Von Laban's analysis of action can be used to play with rhythms of speaking and also to understand the minute details of each shape and contact of the mechanism of speech. The Four Elements such as Flow, Space, Time and Force are treated under three headings: The Element in speech and in acting, Exercises to practise that Element in rhythms of speech and the effect of the Element on the making of vowels and consonants. Flow is clearly evident in individual speech patterns, the expression of emotion and in functional uses of speech, such as explanations, the giving of factual information. In Broken Flow, the speaker may feel trapped between the urge for free expression and the need for precision; a speaking rhythm of Broken Flow can be painful, maybe harsh or violent. Vocal Force is linked not only to the use of Volume in sound and speech, but also to the Force of the speaker's intentions.
