ABSTRACT

The use of field-based experiences, that is, professional learning designed to take acquired knowledge, skills, and dispositions and practice them in a real-life environment, has continued to be a cornerstone for educational leadership programs. These essential pieces of preparation for school leadershipactual practice of the craft under the supervision of a mentor, coach, or supervisor-have various names when implemented as a part of school leadership curricula, such as internships, apprenticeships, and experiential components of coursework. This chapter examines these hands-on approaches to school leadership learning in terms of the types of approaches that exist, research that has been conducted about them, important findings from the research, and directions that future research can take.
