ABSTRACT

Studying production means understanding the everyday practices of television production and the experiences of those who work within it (Mayer et al. 2009). But it also involves looking more widely at those factors that make production possible, tracing the cultural, social, political, technological and economic conditions within which creative writers, producers and technicians are placed. Particularly important is a study of the institutions that employ them, the structure of the industry and the regulation and legislation that affect their work. We explored this broader landscape and its upheavals in Chapter 3.
