ABSTRACT

This chapter begins with a short interactive exercise exhibiting some features of values that are important for understanding the challenges they present for practice. It explores values-based practice indicating how it supports stakeholders in responding to the values challenges of practice. The chapter outlines the potential contribution of values-based practice to well-being. Values-based practice has been developed thus far mainly in healthcare. To the extent that the challenges of well-being are or reflect values challenges they should be susceptible to similar values-based approaches. Mental health though is the one area of healthcare where treatment may in certain circumstances is given to an adult and competent patient in direct opposition to their express wishes. Compulsory psychiatric treatment so described may seem in flat contradiction to the principles of values-based practice. The chapter concludes with a brief review of continuities and discontinuities between values-based practice in healthcare and work on well-being.
