ABSTRACT

The first level of cognition, comprised by the automatic thoughts (ATs), emotions, behaviors and physiological reactions, is introduced by means of the case conceptualization diagram (CCD), level 1. It discusses the transcript of part of Julia's first session. After the therapist helped her identify the problems and goals of therapy, he introduced her to level 1 of the CCD. This can be done by means of the three-person example, where the therapist pictures three different people having different thoughts, emotions and behaviors in the same situation. As the empty chair approach will be largely used during the trial-based cognitive therapy (TBCT) treatment, this is also a way of introducing the empty chair concept without asking the patient to change chairs just yet. This chapter discusses the conversation between the patient and therapist which distinguishes situations from thoughts and emotions.
