ABSTRACT

This chapter explores of how biopolitics of security takes factically finite Life as its referent object of security by detailing how it enframes risk as a biopolitical security technology. Since contingency is constitutive of the life of emergent being, this chapter explains that a biopolitics of security that seeks to make life live cannot secure life against contingency but must secure life through governmental technologies of contingency. Risk is one of these technologies. It also explains how risk came to pervade the biopolitics of security of the twenty-first century, and how, through the way in which it is traded on the capital markets, it has begun to acquire the properties of money. The chapter closes by further describing how biopolitics of security differs from traditional prophylactic accounts of security, and how biopolitics of security exceeds the liberal political thinking that rationalises and legitimates them.
