ABSTRACT

The psychological and religious implications of alchemy were Jung's major preoccupation during the last thirty years of his life. This collection of shorter Alchemial Studies has special value as an introduction to Jung's work on alchemy. In 1928, Richard Wilhelm, co-author of this book, sent the author the text of The Secret of the Golden Flower at a time that was crucial for his own work. At that time it seemed to the author a matter of no importance that The Secret of the Golden Flower is not only a Taoist text concerned with Chinese yoga, but is also an alchemical treatise. A deeper study of the Latin treatises has taught by the author better and has shown him that the alchemical character of the text is of prime significance. The reader will find more about this in two essays published by the author in the Eranos Jahrbuch 1936 and 1937.
