ABSTRACT

How should we analyze this problematic? And

what can we learn from Heidegger’s gesture to

understand the improper today? Of the many

commentators, Esposito and Nancy offer us

perhaps the most detailed analysis of Heideg-

ger’s schizophrenic stance towards the impro-

per. Both Nancy and Esposito are crucial for

understanding why existence is always proper

and improper. I will follow their line of thinking

in order to find an answer to the question of the

improper today. Esposito states that in order for

there to be something common, there must be

something different from the proper. In order

to live, a community is condemned to include

what it wants to exclude. Consequently, we are

subjects of nothing but our own expropriation

(Esposito, Immunitas).
