ABSTRACT

In this chapter, I examine how Huan-ting zen (Huangting chan 黃庭禪; hereafter HTZ),1 a small (but dynamic) Taiwan-based ‘body, mind, spirit’ group, uses digital media as part of its set of emotion transformation techniques.2 HTZ workshops are characterized by the extensive use of multimediavideos, recordings and images are generated and projected in almost every session. Through channels such as retreats, videos and literature, participants learn about the energy and emotion regulator known as the huangting and how they can mobilize it. Having become established in Taiwan with offline and online communities, it is through the canny use of digital media that HTZ began developing its presence in the People’s Republic of China (PRC).
