ABSTRACT
Modern psychology has one thing in common with modern physics, that its method enjoys greater intellectual recognition than its subject. Pierre Janet and Morton Prince both succeeded in producing four to five splittings of the personality, and it turned out that each fragment of personality had its own peculiar character and its own separate memory. The aetiology of their origin is frequently a so-called trauma, an emotional shock or some such thing, that splits off a bit of the psyche. Freud's theory is a faithful account of his actual experiences during the investigation of complexes. The oldest literary records bear witness to them; thus the Gilgamesh Epic describes in masterly fashion the psychology of the power-complex, and the Book of Tobit in the Old Testament gives the history of an erotic complex together with its cure.
