ABSTRACT

The Bologna Process was conceptualized to act as a significant force in unifying, modernizing, and ultimately revolutionizing global higher education. It continues to drive pioneering changes to make universities more competitive, accountable, and effective by leveraging elements of academic mobility, intergovernmental consensus, transnational cooperation, and degree portability all features of the Bologna mission. Most of all, Bologna has provided an identity for higher education in Europe. This chapter explores some specific reform practices initiated by Bologna, prospects for their sustainability, and some challenges which lie ahead as suggested by Process participants, proponents, and critics. It examines how the resilience of the Bologna Process will continue to be tested by world events including those in economic, political, social, and cultural spheres. Social media is beginning to be used to convey information about the Bologna Process especially through the use of websites, blogs, and videos, although this is still evolving.
