ABSTRACT

Ethics and international relations (IR) is a broad field that approaches the pantheon of topics in international affairs and world relations with a wide array of philosophical, ethical, and normative theoretical resources. Because of its diversity and interdisciplinarity, there are a number of ways to organize the field of ethics and IR. While 'international ethics' was largely banished to the periphery of the field during the Cold War years, several decades have witnessed its re-emergence as one of the most eclectic and interdisciplinary research fields. This 're-emergence' of ethics and IR occurred during the latter stages of the Cold War, with scholars again considering the ways in which ethical issues impacted the behaviors of international actors. Most scholars and students working in the United States acquired their training in the field of political science, and within that, the subfields of IR or political theory. The chapter also presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in this book.
