ABSTRACT

This chapter talks about a requirement for determining the voltage at the terminals of the equipment to ensure that items of electrical equipment is functioning correctly and safely. As the maximum volt drop occurs when the circuit is at full load and at maximum cable operating temperature would be unlikely that an accurate instrument measurement would be achievable. Hence the calculation method is used. This is simply based on old Ohm's law. The length and csa of the cable/conductors or a measured value of resistance and the full load current are needed. The circuit protective conductors are selected based on the current-carrying capacity and the voltage drop in accordance with the design. The voltage drop is not normally required for initial verification of the circuit protective conductors. The voltage drop inspection is applicable for both single phase and three phase systems.
