ABSTRACT

The Epilogue turns to Cullen's post-Review period. Drawing from the sporadic accounts in his personal notebooks, it pieces together a possible picture of the final three decades of his career. After the publication of the book, as he downshifted to Townscape consultant, educator, and practicing architect, Cullen's career wavered. It was a shift that removed him from the pressure and stimulation of the press, from the core function of image making, and, therefore, his creative energy source. Nevertheless, Cullen's canonical status was assured by his authorship of Townscape and the massive circulation of his drawings in the stream of mass media. The epilogue also confirms the broader point of this study regarding the role of image makers in the postmodern world.
