Teaching L2 Reading Using Evidence-Based Practices

WithWilliam Grabe, Fredricka L. Stoller

This chapter focuses on effective teaching practices for second language reading-skills development, building upon insights gained from reading research and reading curriculum-design principles. It describes a bridge between the research and the teacher-initiated action research projects. The chapter describes evidence-based teaching ideas that can be incorporated into existing reading instruction, form the foundation for new reading curricula, or be adapted for textbook- and materials-development efforts. It introduces instructional practices that are aligned with the four core reading-curriculum principles. The chapter introduces ideas for building a strong vocabulary-development framework. These techniques are certainly more effective than simply asking students to memorize words, a technique mentioned all too frequently by teachers as their predominant vocabulary teaching tool.
