ABSTRACT

This chapter presents some examples of different research methodologies used to develop intercultural good practice, ranging from survey and audit to vignette methodology for more specific practice-based research about change agents and the development of intercultural good practice/multicultural competency guidelines. Some small pilots indicate that more black and ethnic minority clients may access dramatherapy than other psychological therapies. Some dramatherapy intercultural practice by United Kingdom dramatherapists has been included in arts therapies edited volumes, a special issue of the Dramatherapy journal or general-practice volumes. The British and American dramatherapy professional associations have been developing intercultural good practice and cultural competency guidelines and have engaged in a process of exchange in this development. According to cultural competency models, arts psychotherapists must cultivate an awareness of their cultural identities and beliefs to better understand how their perspectives impact on their perceptions of their patient.
