ABSTRACT

Transport involves the movement of either persons or goods between one place and another. This chapter focuses on the movement of persons and identifies some of the global influences, population, income, level of urbanisation and the speed and cost of different parts of the transport supply. Since most people will have a permanent residence, the underlying reason for movement is essentially to take part in activities which either cannot be performed in the home or which can be more advantageously performed outside the home. A common piece of terminology is the '(home-based) tour', which involves a series of movements beginning and ending at the home. The primary source of travel information is the household survey, which for transport purposes is usually associated with a travel diary. In a number of developed countries, national travel surveys are carried out on a regular or occasional basis.
